Description
Ceramic wall sculpture The Space In Between by Michelle Maher. This is a large-scale outdoor sculpture – 106 pieces – priced at €9,500.
Pieces are also priced individually from €25 – €675 each. Individual prices are available here The-Space-In-Between_Price_List_17Nov2017. If you wish to purchase a piece please get in touch!
The inspiration for the sculpture is two-fold. Firstly, it is inspired by the microscopic world of plant cells – in particular, vascular bundles in plant stems when we see them in cross-section. Then, there is the space in between these cells, and what this might represent for us emotionally.
All 106 pieces were individually hand built and modelled in a grogged stoneware clay body in my studio in Dublin. The pieces are all high fired in an electric kiln to 1260°C.
The surface decoration was very important in this sculpture as well as the use of colour and texture. No two pieces are the same.
The piece features gloss, satin, dry, reactive and volcanic/crater glazes as well as engobe.
Nine stoneware glazes come together to create the colours and textures we see in this piece; having been applied by pouring, slip trailing (splashing) and painting layer after layer of glaze.
Dimensions may vary as will the glaze finish.
Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Would suit a commercial, residential, garden or public setting. Installation costs are not included.
